More and more, English speakers are learning Spanish. At a Houston Baker Oil Tools plant, one of the most important manufacturers in the world for the oil industry, a Baker Hughes company, executives and technicians are learning the language of Cervantes, meeting for class several times a week, including even the plant manager, Roger Hegdahl. Their teacher is Christopher Hurtado, of Linguistic Solutions, a company specializing in overcoming cross-cultural barriers. For large corporations, knowing Spanish is a matter of safety (or communicating with their hispanic employees,) marketing (communicating with their growing portfolio of Spanish-speaking clients) and it’s also a matter of personal development, since, after all, the hispanic culture is great and very interesting.
